The Via Augusta is somewhat shorter, stretching a total of 1,500 kilometers. This Roman road connected the Pyrenees with Cádiz and is well signposted as it passes through Puçol. Currently, it is mostly paved and crosses the Valencian Community for 425 km, much of it running less than 25 kilometers from the Mediterranean Sea.
The Via Augusta was the longest road in all of ancient Hispania, from the Pyrenees, along the Mediterranean coast, to Cádiz in southern Spain. Although many of its original sections are now roads and are not accessible on foot, if you decide to explore part of this route, you can walk along sections that still coincide with the ancient itinerary.
This route, which includes at least 96 monuments, is part of the European Union's Roman Roads in the Mediterranean initiative and offers, in addition to a wealth of cultural attractions, beautiful landscapes that you can enjoy on foot, horseback, or by bicycle. Choose the sections you like best or create your own personalized route, as the gentle gradient of this trail makes it easy. Furthermore, the mild Mediterranean climate allows you to take this trip practically any time of year.
Remains of mansions, bridges, and monumental arches, such as the one at Cabanes (Castellón), appear along your path on an unforgettable journey that passes through places like Jávea and Elche (Alicante) or Sagunto (Valencia), where you can visit its Roman Theatre, about 9 kilometers from Puçol. Landscapes of fruit orchards, especially orange groves, will accompany you along the way. In addition, you cannot miss the magnificent landscapes surrounding the Via Augusta, such as the Desierto de las Palmas in Castellón, or the natural parks of Albufera in Valencia and Carrascal de la Font Roja in Alicante.
